I should have known better of course.Īfter I nuked the entire MountedDevices key (nuke from orbit - only way to be sure) I made sure the SSD was the *only* drive connected, rebooted, Win7 assigned it the proper boot drive designation, and I then proceeded to plug in any other SATA devices. After being cloned I was greeted with a perpetual 'preparing desktop' loop and profile errors due to conflicts in HKLM/system/MountedDevices. So, Win7 saw it, assigned it a device ID and letter, and this created a mess when the machine was eventually cloned because Win7 assumed it was a different drive letter. I made the mistake of plugging the SSD into the existing windows installation before cloning. Used Macrium reflect and an offline clone via their CD to be a bit anal about it, and it went without a hitch, aside from one problem: This machine has WAY too much registered software to even comprehend a rebuild, and would have been highly disruptive.
I just recently migrated / cloned a fairly complex Win7 desktop to a Samsung 840.
